Hot-dogs might be a favorite for most children, but the new Morgan Aquatics Center is grilling more than just hot dogs. It’s satisfying the healthy appetites of families looking for a cool escape.

The Aquatics Center is grilling veggie burgers, teriyaki burgers, hamburgers and chicken. The concession will have fresh fruit, funnel cake, sodas and more.

Morning swim lovers grub on bagels, muffins and cookies amongst a full-service breakfast of eggs, bacon, pancakes and juice.

Aaron Himelson, Aquatics Center director, said that eating is reserved for the outdoor picnic areas and that food cannot be taken to the poolside deck or on the lawn. He also said no outside food or beverages can be brought into the center.

Parents might consider talking to their children about how to handle swimming right after eating.

Himelson said there are no longer any hard rules for the time between eating and swimming.

“Cool money,” a punch card issued to summer season pass holders, gives an extra 25 percent off of select foods and merchandise including swimwear, goggles, sunscreen and swim diapers.

To avoid closing the pool for maintenance and spur-of-the-moment cleaning, all children under 3 must wear swim diapers.

“Swim diapers are a must-have,” Himelson said.

Big Squirts, stretchy hose guns able to shoot powerful splashes of water, will be on sale in several different colors. Special stations for free big squirt water refills will also be on site. With an attachment included in the package, Big Squirts can also be filled from home hoses.

A water squirt sale and play area was set up for children at the Mushroom Mardi Gras Festival and, according to lifeguard/swim instructor Lee Bell, sales and water play were quite successful.

Season passes of several levels are on sale.
