The Morgan Hill Branch of the American Association of University Women has awarded its 2004 scholarships to three local high school girls and one Gavilan Community College woman. Funds for the scholarships come from the proceeds of the annual AAUW 10K, 5K, 2 K Wildflower Run held each spring.
Scholarships of $500 each were given to seniors Dana Cline, Justine Pingue and Katie Peterson, all from Live Oak High School. Criteria for the awards were solid academic performance, community service and commitment to the educational goal of attending a four-year college.
Each applicant had to respond to written questions and compose a brief essay on challenges facing women today. Finalists were then interviewed and the winners selected by the branch scholarship committee.
Dana Cline plans to go to the University of Nevada at Reno, where she will major in nutrition and minor in photography. Soccer has been an important part of her life.
Justine Pingue, who loves volleyball, will attend San Jose State University. She plans to major in occupational therapy.
Katie Peterson will also go to San Jose State and is interested in dance and design. She has not yet decided on a major.
A $600 scholarship was given to Anita Grijalva, a continuing student at Gavilan College. Grijalva, who is originally from Morgan Hill but now lives in Aromas, is an older single mother who has returned to school in order to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.
She has an outstanding academic record and enjoys tutoring younger classmates. After another semester at Gavilan, she will continue her education at California State University at Monterey.
The Wildflower Run is the branch’s annual fundraiser to benefit education for women and girls. In addition to local scholarships, money is raised for the AAUW Educational Foundation, which helps fund women’s graduate study, research grants and community action projects.
The Wildflower Run also raises money to send middle school girls to Tech Trek, a math/science/technology camp at Stanford University. This year, two girls from Britton and two from Martin Murphy will attend camp in July. Tech Trek is sponsored by AAUW California and takes place at five campuses in the state each summer.
AAUW promotes equity and education for all women and girls. Details about AAUW in Morgan Hill, its program and activities: Bobbi Graham, 782-5874, or Margo Hinnenkamp, 782-1712, or check out the branch website at www.aauw-morganhill.org/
