The Morgan Hill Pride 12U Green qualified for the NSA nationals in Seattle in July by sweeping pool play with three wins during the Fremont tournament last weekend.
Following are the tourney results:
PRIDE 6, Gilroy Shockers Black 2
The Pride opened the tournament with their best offensive effort. Shayna Osuna led the way with a pair of hits, with Stephanie Doting, Ally Barsanti, Brittany Vaughn, Amanda Whitling, and Kelly Henningsen each chipping in with a hit. Barsanti scored two runs, and Kelly Hillman and Frankie Kellett handled the pitching chores in the Pride’s first win of the weekend.
PRIDE 5, Cupertino Inferno 4
The locals beat the Inferno for the second time this year, but needed to come from behind to do it. The Pride scored two runs in the second inning. Whitling and Kellett walked, and Amanda Kline then laid down a bunt for a hit that scored Whitling. An overthrow at second as Kline advanced allowed Kellett to score as well.
The Pride tacked on two more in the third as Hillman and Doting walked, and Osuna singled to score Doting. Osuna intentionally got into a rundown and occupied the defense long enough for Cat Molnar (running for Hillman) to score the tying run.
The Pride got the winner in the last inning, as Kellett and Kline started the rally drawing walks. Molnar then hit a grounder to short, where the Inferno defender tried to tag Kellett. The hustling Kellett jarred the ball loose, and scored the winner as the Inferno overthrew at third.
PRIDE 1, Cupertino Inferno II 0
The Pride had their best defensive effort of the tournament, as Hillman went the distance on the mound for the well-earned shutout, limiting the Inferno to three hits. The locals scratched out their lone run in the second as the Amandas, Whitling and Kline, teamed up. Whitling reached second on a pair of errors and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kline laid down a bunt base hit to score Whitling for the only run Hillman would need. Jacey Turay and Barsanti chipped in with hits, and Kellett saved the shutout with a beautiful play from her third-base position. An Inferno runner reached third with one out, and the batter laid down a bunt. Kellett fielded and made a great fake throw toward first, then tossed home to easily catch the bamboozled runner.
Cupertino Inferno 5, PRIDE 1
The Pride ended the tournament on a down note, being able to score only a single run against the Inferno. Whitling, Vaughn, and Kline had the only three hits for the Pride, and Doting scored the only run.
