Heow much time is too much time? Many golfers spend more time than they need tinkering with their swing, with club selection or over-analyzing the shot. The PGA Tour allows a player 40 seconds to hit a shot. I still think that’s too long. On average, it should take only 15-20 seconds once you have made your club selection. Playing competitive golf, I would always sense when my competitor or I was getting a little nervous or uncomfortable. You start adding extra waggles, thinking swing fundamentals and, most obvious, spending too much time preparing or executing the shot. When approaching your shot, you should first inspect the lie. Second, check yardage and wind direction. Third, make your club selection. And fourth, go through your pre-shot routine, focus on the target and swing. Next time you’re out practicing, use a watch with a second hand to test how long it takes to hit a shot. If it’s over 30 seconds, you’re taking too long.
