As much as 40 percent of the average golfer’s score is determined from 100 yards and in. However, I see the majority of people at our practice area working on their full swing only. The chip shot around the green can many times save you many strokes throughout your round. Here are some tips that will help you get it “up and down” if you’ll practice them diligently. Starting with your set-up, open your feet and hips left of the target, making it easier to see and swing to the target. It will also cause the backswing to be more on the target line rather than inside and restricts the backswing length, which provides for better control. Narrow your stance keeping the majority of your weight onto your left foot, helping you to avoid overshifting to the right side. For normal lies, play the ball in the center of your stance, moving it toward your back foot for more difficult lies. Let your arms hang comfortably from your shoulders with your hands set slightly ahead of the ball producing a slight descending arc into the ball. Chipping is never taken lightly by the serious player.
