Morgan Hill and neighboring Rotary clubs are working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Columbo West in Sri Lanka to provide meaningful help to victims of the tsunami. Your financial support can leverage our efforts and save lives.
Sri Lanka is second to Indonesia in tsunami devastation and loss of life since its coastal geography allowed the waves to sweep far inland, increasing their impact. Deaths are at 30,000 and increasing. Hundreds of thousands – perhaps a million – people are homeless in this country of 20 million.
Death can be minimized by removing the threats of dysentery, cholera and other water-born diseases. The Sri Lanka club tells us their most urgent priority is for water purification.
A two-phased project has been developed. Immediate relief is being provided now by sending water purification tablets, transported without charge by FedEx. Relief and recovery will result when portable water purification systems, each capable of generating 1,000-1,500 gallons per day, are sent at the end of January. Singapore Airlines will ship these at no cost. The units sell for $2,300, our volume order will lower the unit price.
The Morgan Hill Rotary Club is contributing the full price of one unit, and we are also collecting individual member donations. Other Rotary clubs in our geography are contributing as well. We invite the community to join us in this very meaningful way of supporting and saving the lives of tsunami victims.
Checks should be made to “Rotary Club of Morgan Hill Endowment” with a notation for “Tsunami Relief”, and mailed to Morgan Hill Rotary, PO Box 283, Morgan Hill CA 95038. Donations made by Jan. 31, 2005, are fully tax deductible in either the 2004 or 2005 tax year. All of your donation will be used to purchase water purification units for Sri Lanka. The units will be shipped at the end of this month, so please act now.
