This week, we’re highlighting a problem that has been fixed.

The city of Morgan Hill has finished replacing an unacceptable bark cover at Nordstrom Park. A caller complained in early September that the bark the city replaced water-hogging grass with was filled with large chunks, twigs and sticks – in other words – more than bark. It was not only unsightly, but dangerous too. Mori Struve, deputy public works director, explained at the time that the bad stuff was a compromise between cost and aesthetics and that he was aware the aesthetics side lost.

They were trying to get a better, safer cover brought in. As we see by driving by and using the park, all is now well. Thanks, Mori, for responding to the public, and to us. It’s always nice when the powers that be listen to your local newspaper.

The reason perimeter grass was replaced by bark in all city parks was to ease last summer’s water shortage. With seasonal high temperatures comes high water use. City wells were stressed trying to meet the need. The situation will be somewhat better next summer because, in October, a perchlorate treatment system was installed on the Tennant well, closed since April 2002 when high levels of perchlorate were discovered. The Nordstrom well already has a system that allows it to operate.
