League play picks up in several fall sports
MORGAN HILL — The first day of Mount Hamilton Division water polo was a rough one in Morgan Hill.
Live Oak High School and defending league champion Leland renewed their conference rivalry at LOHS, and the local boys lost 11-8 but looked impressive behind six goals by Danny Robinson and two by Saul Orona. The Acorns trailed 5-3 at halftime
Later in girls play, Leland netted seven goals in the second quarter on the way to beating Live Oak 19-6. Priscilla Orona had a hat trick for the Acorns, and Rachel Cretcher chipped in two goals.
Across town, the Sobrato boys lost 12-6 to Pioneer, and the Lady Bulldogs lost 22-3 at Sobrato High School. Mathew Byrne scored twice to lead the SHS boys.
Three local teams play in tournaments this weekend. The Lady Acorns host the Wahine Classic at LOHS — Sobrato is in the field — while the Live Oak boys visit the St. Francis Tournament in Mountain View.
The Sobrato boys’ next game is against Santa Teresa at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln High School.
FIELD HOCKEY
Kirsten Doting scored and had an assist Wednesday as Live Oak opened Santa Teresa Division play with a 2-0 road win over Lynbrook.
Doting set up a goal for Megan Rauschnot, then scored off a pass from Anisha Patel. Both goals came in the first half.
The Acorns host Prospect at 3:30 p.m. today.
Wednesday in Morgan Hill, Sobrato beat University 2-1 at the Outdoor Sports Center on a late goal by Rachel Bakin.
Katie Merten put the Bulldogs on the board early in the West Valley Division opener, deflecting teammate Andrea Salem’s shot into the net during the first half.
Bakin score the game-winner on a beautiful hit from just outside the 16-yard shooting circle.
Sobrato hosts a rematch with University at 4:15 p.m. today.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Sobrato Bulldogs earned a split in their first Santa Teresa meet Tuesday against Westmont, as the boys won 42-17, and the girls lost 29-27 at Alumni Rock Park. The meet featured all eight teams in the league.
The Sobrato boys produced three top-10 overall finishers on the 2.95-mile course. Sophomore Ryan Corvese placed third, followed by Winston van Keulen in fourth and Derek Diesenroth in eighth.
Junior Courtney Ellenburg finished 16th in 21 minutes, 42 seconds to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
Sobrato’s next meet is against Piedmont Hills at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Two weeks ago, the Sobrato boys’ freshman group of Matt Hanlon, Derrick Ando, Kyle Alexander, Austin Heiser, Cody Hulme, Nino Fortuna and Christian Hughes made a big start to the season by placing third in their class at the Early Bird Invitational at Toro Park, site of this year’s section finals. The meet fielded about 50 schools.
