A Salinas man died in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 101 north of Morgan Hill.
The 27-year-old driver was traveling southbound on the freeway in a red 1995 Ford Ranger with a 26-year-old female passenger, also from Salinas, police said.
The vehicle went off the left side of the freeway into the center median, near the intersection of State Route 85, and hit a metal guard rail about 11:32 p.m. Monday, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle then crashed into a concrete support pillar underneath the highway.
The driver suffered trauma to his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The passenger was transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center with injuries including a right pelvic fracture, cuts to her face and right eye, and fracture to the right side of her face, police said.
Police did not release the names of the driver or passenger.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.
