In the name of transparency, the city of Morgan Hill unveiled a new page on its website that details of city worker’s salaries, benefits, over-time pay, allowances and leave payouts.

City Manager Ed Tewes announced the list, which can be found at www.morgan-hill.ca.gov under “what’s new,” at Wednesday’s city council meeting. The total compensation for the city’s 206 employees in 2009 was $20,609,604.

In his notice at the meeting, Tewes referenced the city of Bell that was struck by political scandal when it was discovered its mayor was making more than $800,000 a year and other city employee’s were making similar salaries. Tewes said public perception of city government is “dependent on the integrity and openness.”

Until Wednesday, interested people would have to make a public records request to see a list of city workers’ salaries, which Tewes said is often asked of the city. Now, in one document, the public can see how the city is spending its money to support its employees.
