A fire Saturday in Gilroy led to police discovering an indoor marijuana operation where at least 300 mature plants were seized with an estimated street value of $200,000.
The Gilroy Fire Department responded to a 911 call regarding an extinguished electrical fire in the 9100 block of Wren Avenue, and discovered unknown persons had spliced electrical meter wires near the residence where the plants were later discovered.
Gilroy Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said illegal marijuana cultivators often tamper with their electrical meters in order to conceal growing activities, which generate noticeably higher electrical usage.
“For example, if you had a high-meter reading, PG&E would come and ask you a series of questions to make sure you’re being energy efficient,” he said. “In this case, (the growers) were trying to conceal the fact they are using a lot of electricity to facilitate their operation.”
According to a press release issued by the Gilroy Police Department, police arrived at the scene and noted a strong odor of marijuana emerging from the house. Officers were unable to locate the residents and forced entry into the house, where they discovered the illegal growing operation in a secret location.
Gilroy Fire personnel also determined the electrical fire was responsible for a neighborhood-wide power outage, according to the press release.
Gallacinao said indoor marijuana appears to be a growing trend within the county, and urged community members to be aware of activities potentially hinting to illegal operations within their neighborhoods.
“Usually the owner of the property isn’t involved, and it’s a renter,” he said. “We want to make sure people are aware of the safety concerns, as these things can often times lead to fires and hazardous conditions.”
Gallacinao said signs often include people frequenting the house – but not living there, abnormal traffic coming and going from the property, concealed windows and doors and suspicious odors.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information about this incident may call 408-846-0350 or 800-782-7463 to remain anonymous.
