Teachers rule and students drool. For about one hour Friday night at the Britton Middle School gym, teachers and students had the chance to do something they’ve only dreamt about – peg each other in a dodgeball game.
Nine teams of Britton students went toe to toe with a powerhouse crew of 15 teachers and staff. In front of a crowd of about 300, the school band played some tunes, the trash talk flew and only one student team came out on top. It was a true underdog story, with a celebration that mirrored a slightly more rowdy Olympic medal ceremony.
“We’re Britton Middle School and we just smashed on the teachers!” yelled Josh Malech, eighth-grade Team USA’s
captain. “We smashed!”
The first game of its kind at Britton was thrown to raise money for its Home and School Club. They charged at the door and sold T-shirts, racking up $1,900 by the end of the night. The money will support Britton’s Physical Education department.
“It’s fun. It’s great to get out here and be with the kids because they don’t usually see us like that,” said Caroline Caracciolo, an eighth-grade English teacher.
Teachers donned knee-high striped gym socks, head bands and sweat bands – reminiscent of the Average Joes. They were given the 3-foot-tall dodgeball trophy at the end of the night for their 8-1 record over the much smaller, yet less agile, student teams.
The real glory goes to the winning student team who walked on campus Monday as heroes.
“We played our hearts out,” Team USA’s BJ Kendrick said.
