Sobrato manager Shorty Gutierrez said the Mount Hamilton
Division opener will likely be postponed
MORGAN HILL — As much as he would like the extra practice for his newly reassembled baseball team, Sobrato manager Shorty Gutierrez very much wants to get Wednesday’s showdown with Live Oak in the books weather permitting.
That game, one of two meetings scheduled this week between the Morgan Hill programs, is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Sobrato High but could be postponed because of rain.
Although Wednesday’s forecast calls for light precipitation, it won’t take much to shelve the Mount Hamilton Division opener. Fresh dirt and a new pitching mound have recently been laid on the Bulldogs’ varsity field, which was softened by today’s showers.
“Right now, it’s soft out there, so I’m thinking it’s pretty much done,” Gutierrez said. “We’re going to try and go Wednesday as planned, but if it rains hard tonight and continues at all Wednesday, we’ll have to reschedule.”
If the field dries enough, Live Oak and Sobrato could play Thursday and follow with Game 2 of their three-game season series Friday at LOHS, Gutierrez said. They may wait until Friday to play, then make up Wednesday’s game Monday at SHS. Gutierrez will announce the decision Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (0-1) had to reschedule their opener against The King’s Academy last week because of rain. Saturday, they lost 13-1 at Los Gatos in a rematch of last year’s Central Coast Section Division II final but were missing several key players who were still in basketball season.
Sobrato is back at full strength, albeit rustily, this week.
“We’re still figuring out who’s going to play where right now,” Gutierrez said. “It’d be nice to have more time to prepare; I know Live Oak has some games under their belt. But I have to look at it the other way, too. We need the game experience, so we really know what we’re working with.”
The Acorns (2-1) are coming off back-to-back wins over Fremont and Santa Clara.
