Morgan Hill – Senior Mattie Borges and junior Megan Gulla each recorded a double-double in Live Oak’s 53-48 victory over host Monterey Wednesday night. The Lady Acorns improved their record to 5-4 overall.
Gulla led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Gulla also hit 11 out of 13 free throw attempts. Borges added 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
“I’m really pleased with how they played,” said Acorns’ coach Jeff Perkins. “It’s the first time we went into someone else’s gym and won a close game. We played really good defense and made all of our free throws down the stretch.”
The Acorns, who only had seven players in uniform due to injuries and illness, went to the free throw line 29 times in the close match as Monterey played a very aggressive man to man defense and fouled the Acorns often.
“They played with confidence,” said Perkins. “Megan scored the most points anyone from Live Oak has scored in a long time and Mattie is such a hard worker on the boards, especially the offensive boards where it is hard to get in there and grab them.”
Live Oak returns to action Tuesday at home against North Monterey.
SOBRATO GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Lady Bulldogs had a tough week losing to Fremont Christian 48-25 on Monday night and then dropping a nail-biter to Overfelt 50-49 on Wednesday. Sobrato’s record is now 2-3 overall.
In the one point loss to Overfelt, the Bulldogs battled back from a 12 point deficit only to lose with 13 seconds left to play.
“This was our toughest loss thus far,” said Sobrato’s coach Rodney Tabares. “We were so close and battled back.”
Sophomore Alex Cervantes led Sobrato with 12 points and three steals and teammate Laura Billos contributed seven rebounds, five points and one assist. Michelle Bradley added nine points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
In Monday’s loss to Fremont Christian Sobrato was led by Billos with 10 rebounds, six points and two steals. Freshman guard Sarina Santiago added six points, two rebounds and one steal in the loss.
Sobrato’s young team is made up of mostly freshman and sophomore starters, which gives them a disadvantage against bigger, more experienced varsity teams.
“Our two biggest issues in the losses were defensive matchups and poor referees,” explained Tabares. “We just lack some game experience.”
The Lady Bulldogs were back on the court to face Anzar at home last night.
