MANTECA — President’s Day weekend, the South Valley Storm (comprised of players from Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy) shook off the rust from a three-month break to win the Super National Invitational 10U AA Baseball Tournament in Manteca.

The three-day event fielded 10 travel teams from Northern California.

At the completion of the three-game, pool-play portion of the tournament, SV Storm was seeded second with a 3-0 record.

In the semifinals, SV Storm beat the Tiburon Pirates 11-6 and advanced to face the No. 1-seeded Fremont Reds, who gave up three runs in their previous four games.

Three innings into the championship game, the Storm found themselves down 8-2. Over the next three innings, the bats came alive with clutch hitting from Christopher Knopf, Billy Mazotti, P.J. Rochon and D.J. Washington.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, tournament MVP Nathan Medrano came through with the game-winning hit to send the SV Storm to a 13-12 victory.

The tournament was a full-team effort with outstanding pitching from Lucas Schmidt (elected to the All-Tournament Team) and Mazotti; timely hitting from Rochon, Dylan Holler, Derek Petersen, and home runs from Nolan Cisewski and Mazotti.

With the win, SV Storm qualified to compete in the 2010 10U AA World Series that will be held in various locations across the country. The Storm is headed to Cooperstown in June to participate in a major national tournament.
