Three local residents recently received awards from the YMCA for outstanding volunteer service. During the nonprofit organization’s recent Red Triangle Dinner in San Jose, Mt. Madonna YMCA honored Gladys Aichele of Morgan Hill with its Distinguished Service Award and Kevin Ngo of Gilroy with its Teen Volunteer of the Year Award. Craig Cuffie of Morgan Hill received the Distinguished Service Award from the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an adult who has deeply impacted the lives of kids, adults or families through several years of volunteer leadership while pursuing the YMCA mission. The Teen Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a teen who has made a positive impact on other YMCA members or on the organization.

“We are proud to celebrate the spirit and work of our outstanding volunteer leadership,” said Kathy Riggins, president and CEO of YMCA of Silicon Valley. “These honorees have served the YMCA with the greatest dedication, enthusiasm and selflessness. They exemplify the very best of volunteerism and the character and values on which the YMCA was founded more than 150 years ago.”

Aichele volunteers at the Centennial Recreation Center’s Senior Center, operated by Mt. Madonna YMCA. Each day, she leads a team of volunteers to make sure that nearly 100 seniors get a nutritious

lunch at the center. She also substitutes as a line dancing instructor.

Ngo has taken the initiative to help develop and implement an after-school math tutoring program for 5th through 10th graders at a Mt. Madonna YMCA after-school enrichment site. He has helped

younger kids develop more confidence in their studies.

Cuffie serves as chairman of the Finance Committee on the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA Board of Managers. He has helped the YMCA build new corporate partnerships and is a

strong advocate for children with special needs.

YMCA of Silicon Valley serves nearly 190,000 members from communities that span from Gilroy to Redwood City. The organization includes 11 YMCA facilities and YMCA Camp Campbell, a

wilderness resident camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
