A 24-year-old woman suffered cuts to her face and head after rolling her vehicle Monday on southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Martin, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The woman, who was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, was merging onto the highway from San Martin Avenue when she overcorrected and lost control of her Toyota SUV, causing it to roll, CHP Officer Anthony Dorris said.
She then climbed out of her vehicle and made her way to the highway’s shoulder, Dorris said.
“She’s actually lucky she didn’t get hit by oncoming traffic,” he said.
A medical helicopter originally was called to the scene but was canceled after emergency responders determined she was not seriously injured.
Crews worked quickly to clear the roadway, and traffic was halted for about five to eight minutes, Dorris said. The highway’s southbound onramp was closed for several minutes as well, prompting CHP officials to direct drivers to make U-turns back toward San Martin Avenue.
The accident was first called in at 11:48 a.m., according to the CHP.
