San Jose – Lance Wolfsmith kept his hopes for a trip to the CIF State Championships alive with his performance Saturday at San Jose City College.
The Sobrato sophomore, who finished ninth in the state in Division III in cross country in the fall, placed 10th in the boys 3,200 meters at the Central Coast Section semifinals, qualifying him for Friday’s finals at Gilroy High.
He clocked a time of 9:36.15 to earn one of the 12 spots in the finals, but he’ll need to improve on that if he hopes to make the trip to Sacramento for the state meet. Only the top three finishers at CCS qualify and he’s nearly 10 seconds off the third-place spot.
Wolfsmith also competed in the 1,600 meters and finished 17th with a time of 4:28.45.
Sobrato’s other sophomore sensation, Ariel Mosbrucker, was unable to reach the finals in any of her three events she had qualified for. She was 15th in the long jump with a mark of 16-0 1/4 and 16th in the triple jump at 33-1 1/2. She did not compete in the high jump.
The rest of the local athletes also were unable to earn their way into the finals.
Live Oak senior Juillard Robinson was less than 1/2 a second off the eighth-place qualifying time in the 400 meters, but his mark of 51.16 still placed him 14th. The Acorns’ Kevin Abbott was one of five runners who were within a 1/10 of a second of the eighth and final qualifying spot in the 100 meters as he took 13th with a time of 11.33.
The Live Oak boys 4×100 relay team was 18th at 44.32 while the girls team was 21st at 51.43 in that event. The girls 4×400 relay was 18th with a time of 4:07.37.
Acorns’ freshman Erika Rodriguez took 32nd in the 100 meters in her CCS debut and sophomore Courtney Robinson was 23 in the 200 meters. Kate Lowe took 15th in the girls high jump for the Acorns and Katie Armstrong finished 19th.
Sobrato freshman Alan Rios was a little more than a second shy of qualifying in the 800 meters. He finished 11th with a time of 1:58.75. The Bulldogs’ Will Cambra, who won the Blossom Valley Athletic League pole vault title, took 18th in that event by clearing 11-6.
Bulldogs junior Abhi Devaraj finished the 3,200 in 12:38.99 and was 34th.
Running events for Friday’s CCS finals at Gilroy are scheduled to begin at 6pm with field events starting at 4pm. The 3,200 meters in which Wolfsmith will compete is slated for 8:25pm, with the girls running first and the boys going second. The finals event of the day – the 4×400 relay – is scheduled for 9pm.
