Dear Editor,
Local public and private schools were given the opportunity to participate in the second annual Hometown Holidays tree decorating contest held in cooperation with the downtown holiday activities. Trees were set up by members of the Morgan Hill Rotary on Saturday morning in time for the schools to decorate for viewing by parade goers on Saturday, Dec. 4. The 13 trees were on display through Dec. 22 in the outdoor amphitheater area.
Schools were asked to decorate using the theme “An Expression of the Holiday Spirit in Our Hometown” and were judged based on how well they carried the theme with handmade decorations and how creative the tree presentation was. The participating schools were Spring Academy, Carden Academy, Sobrato High School, Nordstrom Elementary, San Martin Elementary, Martin Murphy Middle School, Burnett Elementary, Paradise Valley Elementary, Charter School, Oakwood Country School, El Toro Elementary, Barrett Elementary, and Central High. Schools were given $50 to use toward decorations for their trees.
Winning schools received checks toward the purchase of school supplies or equipment.
First prize winner of $500 went to Paradise Elementary School with its themed ‘Kids Helping Kids in Our Town’ decorations. Second prize winner of $300 went to Oakwood Country School and third prize winner of $150 to Spring Academy. There were four Honorable Mentions winning $50 each to: Charter School, Nordstrom Elementary, San Martin Elementary and Martin Murphy Middle School.
