Live Oak fell to 0-2 in nonleague play.

Williams scores SHS-best in victory
SAN JOSE — While the Sobrato boy’s basketball team collected its fourth consecutive victory Friday, Ryan Williams collected two more school records.

Williams, a 6-foot-3 junior forward, scored a program-best 38 points — including 30 in the second half, also a Sobrato High record — as the Bulldogs routed Evergreen Valley 71-59 in San Jose.

Williams, who also holds Sobrato’s single-season mark for 3-pointers made, sank seven treys on the way to snapping the previous single-game scoring record — 34 — held by Marqus Crawford, son of current Bulldogs coach Lawrence Crawford.

“I’m a little bit torn, but not really,” Lawrence Crawford said Monday. “The shooting display (Williams) put on, you couldn’t help but admire it. Anybody that was at the game — even the spectators from the other side said, ‘Hey number 22, great shooting!’ You just had to admire it.

“Knowing he was as good as he is, he had the potential to set a new standard. I was confident he would.”

On the same night Independence suffered its first loss in Blossom Valley Athletic League-Santa Teresa Division play, falling 57-56 at Willow Glen, Sobrato gained sole possession of first place at 14-2 overall and 4-0 in league. Sobrato hosts Willow Glen in a pivotal game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“The motivation is real high for (Willow Glen) to win and force a tie,” Crawford said. “That would put them in first with us and Independence.”

Chris Bradley joined Williams in double figures with 11 points, and Rauley Cambra added six for the Bulldogs, who led 31-28 at halftime. They outscored the Cougars 20-10 during the third quarter.

“(Evergreen Valley) kept it pretty close,” Crawford said. “It’s not that we were playing bad or anything. They were just playing very well. Ryan helped us take control in the second half.”
