All of these immediately recognizable quotes are from films. Movies are an essential part of our shared culture, as much a part of literature as books, poetry and plays. Knowledge of films is an integral part of 21st Century cultural literacy and the library is here to help you expand your knowledge and have some fun at the same time.
The Morgan Hill Library has subscribed to a series of independently produced, award winning films. The subscription gives the library performance rights so that we can show these films publicly.
We’ll be presenting a series of four movies, in free matinee showings every other Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. through May 15. All of the films will be DVDs projected on a screen in our program room. Attendees are welcome to stay after and discuss the film. This series is geared for adults. The films are not rated by the MPAA though all of them contain adult situations and language.
Independent films have been gaining popularity over the years as cable TV’s Independent Film Channel and the renowned Sundance Festival will testify. The library has a number of independent films available to check out in both DVD and VHS formats. By running this series we hope to highlight our cinema collection and to serve the needs of South Valey film fans who currently have no local venue for viewing independent films.
In addition to independent films, the library has a large collection of classic and contemporary Hollywood movies, as well as documentary and foreign movies that span cinema history, from the early silents to recent releases.
Feature films, on DVD or VHS, check out for one week. Non-fiction and made-for-TV videos check out for three weeks. There is no charge to check out movies (as long as you return them on time.) All you need is a library card and a sense of adventure as you explore the wonderful world of movies at the library.
Questions and suggested topics for At the Library, which appears in Tuesday editions, should be directed to Nancy Howe, community librarian, at nh***@**********************ca.us or by calling 779-3196. This week’s column was written by Jeff Grubb. The Morgan Hill Library, located at the corner of Peak and West Main avenues next to City Hall, is open every day but Sunday.
