The deadline to apply for the Morgan Hill city manager’s position is today, and the mayor has invited the public to respond to a community survey about the position.
The survey asks respondents what qualities they feel will be most important when it comes to deciding who the city’s top staff member should be.
Mayor Steve Tate said it’s possible that many of the interested applicants will wait until the last minute to apply for the job because they don’t want to tip off their current employers that they might be leaving for Morgan Hill.
Tate and City Councilman Gordon Siebert, who form a council subcommittee overseeing the search for a new city manager, have not seen any of the resumes or applications submitted so far, and probably won’t until the executive search consultant Ralph Anderson and Associates narrows down the list, Tate said.
The consultant will sift through the applications and screen the candidates, and eventually present a long list of viable candidates to the Council. From there, the Council will select an applicant or applicants to interview and screen further, Tate said.
Ed Tewes, who has served as Morgan Hill’s city manager for the last 13 years, announced in August that he will be stepping down as of Dec. 28. The Council expects to have a new city manager in place by the beginning of 2013.
The Council hired Ralph Anderson and Associates in September for $23,750.
The city also posted its online community survey Thursday, soliciting advice from Morgan Hill residents on what kind of city manager they would hire, and what the important local issues are that the city’s top staff member should be capable of addressing, Tate said.
The survey can be found on the Ralph Anderson website, at the following link: www.ralphandersen.com/CityManagerSurvey.html.
The consultant and the Council will use the results from that survey to assist them in narrowing down the field of applicants, Tate said.
Tate added he expects candidates from all over the state to apply for the city manager’s position.
In 2011, Tewes’ total compensation, including allowances, benefits and leave payouts, was about $263,500. That includes regular wages of about $189,000.
The new city manager’s salary and benefits package will be determined in negotiations with the preferred candidate, Tate has previously said.
