Authorities are investigating a collision in west Morgan Hill that sent two children to the hospital, and police think one of the adult drivers involved in the accident was impaired.
Police and paramedics responded to the accident on West Edmundson Avenue, just west of DeWitt Avenue, about 2:45 p.m. Monday.
A black Land Rover sport-utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on West Edmundson when it crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a blue Toyota Matrix, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Zuniga. The Toyota was traveling westbound.
The two vehicles collided head-on, and spun in different directions after the impact, Zuniga said. The Toyota ended up in a culvert off the north shoulder of West Edmundson Avenue.
The drivers’ sides and front ends of both vehicles were heavily damaged due to the impact. The two occupants of the Toyota – an adult female driver and a 6-year-old boy – were trapped in the vehicle after the collision, and emergency crews had to extract them using a “Jaws of Life” hydraulic tool, Zuniga said.
The Land Rover ended up facing west when it came to rest after impact, Zuniga said. The 36-year-old woman driving that vehicle was uninjured. A 6-year-old girl suffered cuts on her head and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota suffered a “possible broken arm,” and the child in that vehicle suffered bruises due to the collision, Zuniga said. Both were transported to a nearby hospital.
Police think the driver of the Land Rover was under the influence of alcohol and unspecified prescription medication at the time of the collision, Zuniga said.
“We could smell alcohol on her breath,” Zuniga said.
The driver of the Land Rover, whose name was not available as of Monday evening, was transported to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation and a chemical test, police said.
The accident is still under investigation, police said.
