Access offered to warm spots in Gilroy, San Jose and
Sunnyvale
San Jose – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is encouraging anyone requiring shelter during the severe cold snap to use its bus or light rail services to access Santa Clara County warming shelters.
Over the next few days, the Bay Area is expected to experience temperatures below freezing overnight. Several emergency facilities have been set up throughout the county in Sunnyvale, San Jose and Gilroy.
Santa Clara County Executive Pete Kutras declared a local emergency Thursday in response to the National Weather Service forecast of nighttime temperatures dropping into the low 20s. Local temperatures are expected to be the lowest in 10 years.
The county is working in partnership with a number of local agencies, including the American Red Cross, VTA, the Silicon Valley Volunteer Center, National Guard Armories, the Boccardo Center and InnVision.
VTA bus and light rail services to the following shelters are available.
n Gilroy: To access the Gilroy facility, located at 8490 Wren Ave., passengers should use Line 19, which operates until about 8:45pm, or Line 68, which operates until after 10pm.
n San Jose: To access the San Jose facility located at 2011 Little Orchard St., passengers should take Line 26, which operates until after 10pm or take VTA light rail to the Curtner Station.
