San Jose – Between 37 and 60 couples took marriage vows at the County of Santa Clara government center on Valentine’s Day.
On a typical day, the County Clerk Recorder’s Office performs about 15-16 marriages. In 2006, 49 couples were married on Valentine’s Day and in 2005, 51 ceremonies were performed.
“Valentine’s Day seems to bring out the best in couples,” said Supervisor Don Gage, chair of the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “It sure makes it easy to remember your anniversary.”
The county offers civil marriages as a service to the community.
Apparently, it is a popular county service. Some couples come alone, others come with the pageantry of a full wedding party. Last year 2,590 couples were married by the County Clerk Recorder’s office in civil ceremonies.
