Gilroy paramedics pronounced a man dead after a Gilroy man taking his routine morning walk discovered a bloody body lying in the bushes behind Mi Pueblo grocery store on First Street and Wayland Lane around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The Santa Clara Coroner’s Office identified the man as Timothy Ozuna, a 47-year-old Hispanic transient.

Gilroy Police are conducting a death investigation, and have revealed few details about the incident, but Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said the man had no obvious signs of a gunshot wound.

Felix Manuel Chavira said he was coming home from a walk this morning when he saw a man laying near a flowering oleander bush in the back parking lot of Mi Pueblo, which shares a fence with his house on Wayland Lane.

Chavira said a puddle of blood surrounded Ozuna’s body. Within minutes of his discovery, a female employee from Mi Pueblo came outside and called 911.

“I looked at his chest, and it wasn’t rising or falling, and when the medics arrived, I overheard them say ‘he’s cold,'” Chavira said.

Chavira believed the dead man to be homeless, and although he did not recognize the face of the man, he said that homeless people routinely sleep in the bushes behind his backyard.

Without really getting a good look at the body, Chavira said he saw no punctures that looked like gunshot or stab wounds. He did note that there was an abrasion to his forehead.

Chavira said he often worries about his grandchildren when they come to visit, as it is common for homeless people to be near his house, drinking during the day.

“I am always outside if they are outside, because anything could happen in a split second,” he said.

Police have not confirmed any details about the body of the man, and  how he may have died.

“We can’t talk about it right now,” said Sgt. Chad Gallacinao. “Right now, it’s a death investigation.”
