Hot weather

Unseasonably warm weather is set to hit South County today, with highs in the low to mid 90s forecast this week by the National Weather Service.
Today’s highs for the Morgan Hill-Gilroy area are expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, according to NWS meteorologist Roger Gass. The heat is on for the rest of the week as well with temperatures expected to reach low 90s before cooling a bit later in the week.
“These temperatures are 15 to 20 degrees above seasonal averages,” Gass explained. “We have a very strong area of high pressure building from Southern California and up the coast into Central and Northern California. Along with that pressure, we have light winds and offshore winds bringing warmer, drier air into the (South County region).”
NWS statistics show the record high for Oct. 23 in Gilroy at 94 degrees in 1965 and 96 degrees for Oct. 24, also coming in 1965.
“We’re going to get close,” said Gass of approaching those record highs. “We are going to approach and potentially break records for those calendar days.”
