United Way Silicon Valley is boosting overall financial support to its 94 member agencies by nearly 14 percent.

United Way’s Board of Directors authorized increases in agency support totaling $608,000 for this fiscal year, including a 10 percent increase in its Community Fund – the pool of donor gifts shared among member agencies.

Other elements of the support package include raising the minimum amount a member agency receives from the Community Fund to $15,000 and boosting funding for UWSV’s Emergency Assistance Network (nine nonprofit agencies and six police departments that provide a county-wide safety net for people facing eviction, utility disconnection and hunger) by more than $100,000.

President and CEO Mark Walker cited two reasons for the increase:

“First, our campaign had one of the largest increases in the country last year,” said Walker. “Contributions increased 10 percent, the second-highest percentage increase among the 90 largest United Ways.

“Second, we continue to hold down operating costs so that most of the additional money raised can go to the agencies.”

UWSV Board Chair Joe Natoli, who chaired the 2002-2003 campaign, said United Way was pleased to restore some of the funding that had been cut in previous years.
