Underhand toss for better understanding

Stand 10 – 15 feet off the green and start to underhand toss some balls in the direction of a flagstick. The intent here is to not toss the ball high in the air.

Toss it in a manner where it lands on the green and then has to roll toward the target. What I hope you begin to experience here is that you do not have to toss the ball hard or with speed to have the ball reach it’s target.

You should start to develop a very smooth, rhythmic tossing motion. When you pick the club up try to reproduce this motion when chipping the ball onto the green.

The major mistake I see as a golf professional is students “hit” to hard through the ball when executing these shots.

The potential to develop “feel” for these shots becomes much more difficult for the player. Try this the next time you come out to Coyote Creek Golf Club to practice. Remember “Think Motion Not Notion.”
