Volunteer searching, fundraising for Sierra continue this week

Volunteers continue to search for Sierra LaMar two months after she was reported missing from her north Morgan Hill home, and her family remains grateful for ongoing fundraising efforts organized by numerous people from the South Santa Clara County community. 

Water district elects new board chair, vice chair

The Santa Clara Valley Water District board selected a new chair and vice chair Tuesday. Linda LeZotte and Patrick Kwok respectively, will serve in those positions for 2012.

GPD crackdown on distracted driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Gilroy Police Department will be actively ticketing drivers who are seen texting or operating hand-held cellphones. The zero-tolerance operation will last for the whole of April and 225 local agencies along with the CHP will be taking part.

GVA Cafe celebrates one year

Accident results in major injuries in Morgan Hill

The driver of an SUV was found unresponsive with major injuries after his vehicle crashed on U.S. 101 in Morgan Hill Thursday morning.A 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by a 51-year-old Gonzales man, was traveling north on the freeway “in an unknown lane and at an unknown rate of speed” before the single-vehicle collision Sept. 21, according to a press release from California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Miceli.For an unknown reason, the driver turned the Tahoe to the right, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, according to police. The SUV traveled across the right shoulder of U.S. 101 and collided with the Tennant Avenue overcrossing. The vehicle came to rest in a dirt area just off the right shoulder of northbound U.S. 101.Emergency personnel received the first reports of the accident about 9:15 a.m.When police arrived, the driver was unresponsive and not breathing, according to the press release. After he was resuscitated at the scene, he was transported to a nearby hospital.Police do not know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, which is under investigation.Anyone with information about the accident can call CHP Officer Tiffany Quintana at (408) 848-2324.

Garcia Torres, DA’s Office still sharing evidence

Antolin Garcia Torres, the Morgan Hill man accused of kidnapping and killing Sierra LaMar, declined to enter a plea yet again Thursday at the Hall of Justice in San Jose today, as the attorneys involved in the case have yet to complete the evidence sharing process.

South Valley Civic Theatre presents Shrek the Musical opening Feb. 20

Shrek the Musical opens Feb. 20 and runs Fridays and Saturdays through March 14 with two Sunday showings Mach 1 and March 8. 

Money sought for street repairs

Many of Morgan Hill’s streets are in such bad shape that the City needs to find about $2.4 million more per year just to return maintenance activities to a “safe and sustainable” rate and begin making improvements to existing roads, according City staff.

Government cuts affect those on Section 8

As of Sept. 1, those in the Santa Clara County who receive subsidies from the government's Section 8 voucher program will be required to put 35 percent of their income toward rent – a 5 percent increase from the subsidy that has been in place for decades.
