Two teams with vastly different outlooks going into next week’s Tri-County Athletic League openers prepared for the start of league play in vastly different ways this week.

While the Live Oak High boys basketball team prepared for a possible run at a league title, or at least a CCS playoff berth, by playing a pair of challenging games against tough opponents, the Acorn girls hoops team was bolstering its confidence heading into a difficult league slate with a big win against a lesser squad.

To the uninitiated observer, the LO girls’ 44-25 victory at North Monterey County on Tuesday would seem to be the most impressive of the three contests. While Coach Jeff Perkins was understandably pleased his team’s solid victory, he remained somewhat circumspect.

“We needed something like that,” Perkins admitted. “Our defense was really good. But on offense, we still missed (a lot of) shots, so we still need to work on capitalizing on opportunities. We played a good game against a team that’s struggling.”

LO improved to 3-10 overall heading into Friday’s TCAL opener at North Salinas at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the LO boys (8-6 overall) played Bob Hagen tourney champion Monterey even for a half before falling 48-35 at Live Oak on Wednesday. Matt van Keulen had a team-high 12 points for the Acorn boys.

Last night, LO (8-5 overall) was set to play at Seaside in its final non-league matchup.

The Acorns host North Salinas in their TCAL opener on Thursday at 7pm.
