Although no action will be taken, school boundaries are once again on the agenda for the Morgan Hill School District Board of Education regular meeting Monday.

During their last meeting Sept. 8, trustees weeded out several options presented to them by the boundary committee. During Monday’s meeting, the board will again examine the remaining three options for secondary school boundaries and remaining four options for elementary school boundaries.

The boundary committee, headed by Deputy Superintendent Bonnie Branco, has been meeting since January to prepare options for redrawing school boundaries to present to the board. Branco said during the Sept. 8 meeting that the new boundaries are necessary to alleviate overcrowding at some elementary schools and to provide a better socio-economic balance of students at the schools.

The opening of the new Sobrato High school, set for August 2004, necessitates redrawing the middle school lines and determining which students will attend the new school and who will attend Live Oak High.

Martin Murphy Middle School Principal Rhoda Wolfskehl, responding to rumors that Martin Murphy students would attend Sobrato, while Britton students would attend Live Oak and sixth grade students would move to the middle schools, said Wednesday that no decisions have been made.

“Nothing has been decided yet,” she said. “This is a board decision, and the board is considering options presented by the boundary committee, but certainly nothing is decided … I do know that we are looking at a 7-8 middle school.”

The district is hosting two forums for the public to discuss the boundary changes: Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 6–7 p.m. in the Britton Middle School auditorium, 80 West Central Ave., and Monday, Oct. 13, 6–7 p.m. in the Martin Murphy Middle School auditorium, 141 Avenida Espana, San Jose.

Forums on boundary changes for elementary schools will be held later in the year, perhaps in December or January.

The School Board will also hear an update from Branco on performance-based budget reductions and from facilities on the 2003 summer maintenance projects.

The Morgan Hill School District Board of Education meets Monday at 7 p.m. in the District Office, 15600 Concord Circle. Details: 201-6000.
