Ryan Corvese won the varsity 3,200-meter run and William Puna won the varsity discus to help Sobrato High’s boys track and field team tie for a second-place finish in the Garlic Classic hosted by Christopher on Saturday at Gilroy High.

Corvese, a senior, won the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 17.74 seconds, finishing more than 42 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Puna, a senior, won the discus with a heave of 135 feet, 8 inches.

Sobrato’s boys tied for second place with San Benito with 42 points, only behind Palma, which won with 72 1/2 points.

Also for Sobrato’s varsity boys, Cody Hulme took fourth in the 1,600 in 4:32.77, Thomas Yath was second in the 400 in 51.76, Nathan Merritt was fourth in the triple jump at 41-3 and Miguel Redmond claimed third in the pole vault at 12-6.

For Sobrato’s varsity girls, Amanda Bogden took fifth in the pole vault at 9-0.
