FRESNO
It was a “shutout” Halloween soccer tournament in Fresno last weekend with an outstanding team effort by girls from Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
The under-12 girls competition saw the Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League’s Toro competitive team score in all four games at the Fresno Sports Center taking home the three-foot-high championship trophy.
“The girls played almost flawlessly, not being scored upon once,” coach Kevin Dunwoody said.
Dunwoody also expressed his pleasure with the 14-member team’s hard work and commitment to improving their skills and team work this season.
It was a two-day event for the Toro team that won their first two games on Saturday followed by the playoff at noon on Sunday and the championship at 3 p.m.
Dunwoody and trainer Joe Noyes credited the defense for holding their opponents from scoring goals against them.
The defense was made up of Amy Kryston, Meghan Noyes, Rebecca Rottenborn, Paris Keane, Emily Barham and Brianna Barron.
The halfback line dominated each game with controlled ball work and pinpoint passing, the coach added.
Center halfbacks Shannon Rauschnot and Sabrina Rice kept the team on the forward move allowing little room for the opponents to distribute the ball, trainer Joe Noyes added.
Outside halfbacks Janie Lanz, Emily Guthormsen and Anna Montoya were a constant threat to the opposing defense with their powerful shots and precision crosses, he said.
Forwards Gina Rodriguez, Annie Lopez and (sp) Cailin McCarry blasted shots at the goals from all angles creating havoc for the opposing goalies.
The Toros scored a total of 13 goals, giving up none.
Next up the Toros are getting ready for the District Cup Tournament to be held in the Morgan Hill Sports Complex in November.
