Thorns to …. the out-of-town (San Diego) insurance company that paid the Peña family pennies on the dollar when their Sinaloa Restaurant burned to the ground last summer, and – though this is understandable – to the banks who are refusing to loan the family the money to rebuild on terms reasonable to the Peñas. Between the two, Sinaloa may never rise from the ashes, which would be a tragedy for the restaurant’s loyal customers. The family is trying to form a limited partnership with any of its former customers who want to help out and get the new and improved building up and open. But they need financial help from many, legal and financial advice from a few. Can you say pro bono? We will see if the faithful Sinaloa customers will turn this item into “laurel.”

Laurels to …. the city for moving ahead with the new police station on Vineyard Boulevard. The current building at Main and Monterey has been cramped and crowded for years. Now if only the problem of what to do with the more than 6,000 or so square-feet the city hopes to lease to someone else could be solved. Another point the city can be pleased with is that the budget for the project, which includes tenant improvements to the existing building, which is $9.45 million. Our neighbors in Gilroy are contemplating a more than $26 million facility.

Thorns to …. the insurance companies for Minter & Fahey, the construction company that installed pipes and fuel tanks at the city-school district Corporation Yard on Edes Court. The companies are quibbling over whose coverage was in effect at the time an underground leak developed in one of the tanks. A Santa Clara County judge has ruled that Minter & Fahey, which cannot afford to, must pay the city and school district $1.5 million in clean-up costs, plus attorney fees. The burden for payment falls on the insurance company. The companies do not want to part with their money, but isn’t that the reason they collect premiums? There needs to be a quick resolution to the question of who is responsible so the city and district can continue clean-up efforts.

Laurels to … Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Robert Baines, who ordered convicted child molester Brian DeVries released to rural Washington at his father’s home. There were fears DeVries would be released to Morgan Hill, but the judge and attorneys have seemingly found a reasonable solution. Perhaps this will end well.

Laurels to …. the city Recreation Department for moving full speed ahead with a range of programs and entertainment for Morgan Hill kids. From magic shows, through Summer Playground – and lots in between, including a very special place for birthday parties – local children can no longer say “there’s nothing to do in Morgan Hill.” Late afternoon concerts held in the outdoor amphitheater have entertained older kids and adults alike. With the Youth Advisory Committee advising, we expect to see even more teen-related activities.

Next year when the Aquatic Center opens – possibly as early as Memorial Day – there will be even more for kids of all ages to do.

Laurels to … the players, coaches and parents of the Morgan Hill Pony Baseball 13 team who will be heading down to the Zone Championship in Fullerton July 26-30. The hard work and many hours has paid off. Morgan Hill has won all eight of its Sectional and Regional games, outscoring the competition 77-18. Morgan Hill has committed less than two errors per game, with a team ERA of 0.79 and will play Riverside on Saturday at noon.

Laurels to … the players, coaches and parents of the Pride 12U Green team which will be competing in ASA Nationals in Roseville beginning on Tuesday. The Pride found out they were selected to play in the tournament after another team couldn’t make it. They had finished fifth in the Regional Qualifier – just one place short of qualifying. On Monday the carpool will head for Roseville to get there in time for the opening ceremonies that evening. More than 60 teams from all over the Western United States are expected to attend.

In both cases, it’s a real team effort. Go Morgan Hill!
