Thunder, lightning and rain, oh my.

An unusual for mid-April thunderstorm rattled and rolled through South County Thursday night, with the National Weather Service even issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for South San Francisco and other North Bay cities. Flights at the San Francisco International Airport were delayed as well.

Chris Stumpf, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, said a thunderstorm April isn’t as common as seeing one pass through during the rainy season from November through March.

“But April’s been quite a different story,” Stumpf said.

From April 6 through April 10, Gilroy has seen 1 inch of rain, with another 0.8 that fell between April 11 and today. The total rainfall for April stands at around 1.8 inches. Normal rainfall in April is about 1.4 inches according to historical data.

Thunderstorms shouldn’t make another appearance in South County, Stumpf said, but just remain off the coast.

“One you get rid of (the showers) today, it’s going to be nice. It will be a bit breezy tonight and again tomorrow, but by tomorrow afternoon winds will be calm,” he said.

The National Weather Service forecasts blue skies ahead, especially Sunday when temperatures might reach 70 degrees.
