“Dear Red Phone, has anyone taken a good look at the concrete work that now makes up the center median of Third and Monterey Road? It’s pretty disappointing. The design is lacking and the concrete work is flat out ugly. The form work was sloppy, the lines are not square, it’s not even white concrete! Furthermore, the edges are chipped and air bubbles are visible. This promenade has no architectural congruity with anything downtown. Nothing matches, from the light poles to the concrete to the brickwork. Is this the final rendition? Is this acceptable work for what was paid?
Red Phone: Dear Disappointed, Red Phone contacted Julie Behzad, senior civil engineer in the city’s Public Works Department. She said, as you can tell from all the activity on Third Street and Monterey Road, the project has not been completed and there is a lot of finishing work to be done that will improve the aesthetics prior to final acceptance.
“Our inspection department will continue to thoroughly inspect the site, including all the concrete work, to ensure all improvements comply with the city’s standards,” she said. “Our procedure is to reject any substandard work and have it corrected by the contractor.”
And, she added, “the Third Street Promenade project was always intended to be unique and different from other streets in the downtown.”
So good caller, the majority of work should be complete very soon and the road is scheduled to open by the end of the day Tuesday.
SJPD in Morgan Hill in December?
“Red Phone, Saturday night Dec. 19, there was a lot of police activity near Diana Avenue and James Lex, including a helicopter and a lot of police cars, but I never saw anything in the paper. Can you let us know what was going on? Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear Wondering, Red Phone contacted Sgt. Jerry Neumayer, who said he thought it was a Friday night.
“San Jose Police Department and the Regional Auto Theft Task Force served a warrant in that area that evening,” he said. Since it was SJPD’s case, he didn’t have the details.
Good caller, if you are sure it was a Saturday give Red Phone a ring, otherwise your query has been forwarded to SJPD, so stay tuned for an update.
