9:30 a.m. in the park vsitors center.
Henry Coe State Park will provide a no-charge backpacking training program “Beginner and Intermediate Backpacking” on Saturday, March 6, at 9:30 a.m. in the park vsitors center.

The program, from 10 a.m. to noon, will focuses on the criteria for the selection of backpack equipment with recommended cooking supplies. From 12:30 to 2 p.m. they will discuss how to select a course and how to decide the number of miles to hike in a day. A review of map reading, the new GPS systems and how to use them, how to take compass readings and how to follow a compass course will also be featured.

On Saturday, March 13, first-time backpackers will have the chance to try out some equipment prior to purchasing. Some of the major expense items will be available for rental including backpacks, sleeping bags and tents.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21, an overnight trip is for new backpackers to try out their equipment will be offered. Hike in the park to a place to be selected, camp there overnight and hike out in the morning. About five miles will be hiked each day.
