Dear Editor,
In response to your article “King of the Ranch” in Saturday’s edition, there are two key facts which need to be addressed.
There is no secret deal between the Amah Mutsun of Mission San Juan Bautista and the owners of the Sargent Ranch, Marci and Wayne Pierce.
Our agreement and plans with the Pierces, to create economic development for our tribe without gaming, was included in our petition for tribal recognition that is on file with the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It should also be noted that our petition is the only one under consideration that contains an adopted tribal constitution which prohibits gaming.
Secondly, the Pierces do not need our participation to develop housing on the Sargent Ranch. They already have that right under current county regulations.
We know that the Pierces are sincere in their desire to help us regain our ancestral lands and we look forward to working with them on a project that will benefit both our tribe and the surrounding community.
Irenne Zweirlein, Chair, Amah Mutsun
of Mission San Juan Bautista
