Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is closing three light rail stations for approximately three months. VTA Light Rail Station Platforms along the northern portion of the Santa Teresa–Baypointe line in San Jose are being retrofitted to accommodate new low floor light rail vehicles.
Construction has begun to retrofit the light rail stations from Japantown/Ayer to Tasman.
The Japantown/Ayer, Gish and Metro/Airport Light Rail Stations will be closed for retrofitting through Sunday, June 1. A bus bridge will operate between Japantown/Ayer, Civic Center, Metro/Airport and Gish stations.
Civic Center Station will maintain normal operations and will not be closed during this period of construction.
The VTA Airport Flyer will remain operational and will not be affected during the period of the Metro/Airport station closure. Persons wishing to ride the Airport Flyer must ride the bus bridge to the Metro/Airport Station. Buses will be identified as “Light Rail Bus Bridge.”
VTA customers wanting to board at a closed station will be directed to the adjacent bus bridge stop for the ride to the next open station. Those whose destination is a closed station should board the bus bridge at the nearest open station for rides to closed stations. All other passengers will not be affected and can continue to ride light rail as usual.
The bus bridge will mirror the current light rail schedule to ensure transit access and public safety while construction work proceeds.
Once construction is complete, the segment between Tasman and Japantown/Ayer Light Rail Stations will allow full use of the new low floor light rail vehicles. The platform retrofit will place the station platform at the same level as the train, eliminating the need for wheelchair lifts, and ease boarding and exiting for all riders, while providing additional space for bicycles and wheelchairs.
Additional station groups will be removed from service in the near future for platform retrofits. Platform construction throughout the north segment of stations is scheduled for completion in August 2003.
