How long must we wait for a new library? We extended the Redevelopment Agency in 1999 believing that some of the $147 million would be used to build a new library, along with a community center and sports center. It wasn’t.
We were then told that money would come from the Proposition 14 state funds, so we patiently waited through two rounds of grant applications. No money. Now, we are expected to wait while the city applies once again to the state for funding, even though the Library Commission says it is a waste of time and that there is no chance that we will win. How long must we continue to wait?
In the meantime, the city has used RDA funds to build a beautiful Community and Cultural Center, renovated a charming playhouse, started construction of an aquatic center, and has plans for expanded soccer fields and an indoor recreation center.
But still there are no specific plans for a library. Mayor Dennis Kennedy says a new library is on his “A” list, but the recreation center has a higher priority. It should be pointed out that the RDA list of priorities was set when it was assumed that library funding would come from the state. Now that it is clear that it will not, we need to let the City Council know that it is time to reorder those priorities.
Getting a new library “someday” is not good enough. We want the council to figure out a way to build our new community library – now.
I urge everyone who values books and reading and who believes that a suitable library is important for our children’s success to contact City Council members and tell them that we can wait no longer. We were promised a new library and we want the council to deliver.
