Dear Editor,

I have been reading the Morgan Hill Times for many years (39 to be exact), and never have I been so disgusted and appalled as with the May 7 edition story headlined – One library tax wins – written by reporters Matt King and Carol Holzgrafe.

“The next children’s story at the Morgan Hill Library may go something like this: There was an old man who lived on Del Monte. He voted ‘yes’ for Measure A but not Measure B.”

Apparently, Mr. King and Ms. Holzgrafe assume that it is “old men” who vote down measures for the good of the community. How about “old women,” or “middle aged persons?” Why not Dunne, or Llagas, or Monterey Road?

Even better, why not a “person” from “Sunshine Street”? Why target old people and why also target Del Monte? Folks, this is called discrimination. You state the little story is fictional – yes, it probably is, but what if someone took you seriously – an “old man on Del Monte”?

I highly resent “old people” being portrayed as “those people” who vote against raising taxes for the community as well as resenting Del Monte being used as the street. This is just one more negative way to criticize the elderly.

Interestingly enough, Morgan Hill voters passed both measures – some other cities did not, which of course effected everyone.

I am not so sure I will continue my subscription to the Morgan Hill Times. I am considered an “old person” now, and perhaps I am too “offensive” to purchase your paper.

Sandy Brown, Morgan Hill

Editor’s Note: We did not mean to offend, nor were we casting aspersions on the voting practices of older votes. The “old man” referred to is a play on several famous limericks: “There was an old man from Nantucket” to name just one. And we used Del Monte only because it rhymed with “Measure B.”
