Three-fourths of MH team records PRs at warmup meet in
Gilroy
GILROY — Cold temperatures and rain did not dampen the Morgan Hill Makos’ performances at last weekend’s swim meet in Gilroy. Nearly 75 percent of the team came away with personal-record times.
The weather improved Sunday, and several Makos (85 percent) welcomed it with PR swims, including significant drops and qualifying times.
Swimming in the ‘B’ division, 14-year-old Dana Getreu finished fifth in two races — 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley — and shaved closed to eight seconds off her PR to snag third place in the 100-yard butterfly.
Brandon Pride, 9, PRed in four of his seven events and earned a Pacific Swimming ‘B’ time in the 200 free.
Shelby Mitchell, 13, recorded seven personal-record times in as many disciplines, placing high in each one. She took first in four races, third in two and fourth in one.
Mackenzie Mitchell managed a perfect meet as well. The 12-year-old was 8 for 8 in PRs and placed third in two ‘B’- and ‘C’-division races. She also had fourth- and fifth-place finishes and one sixth-place time. Mitchell’s 47-second drop in the 100-yard backstroke was good for a new Pacific Swimming ‘A’ time as was her performance in the 50-yard freestyle.
Kaitlin Rooney, 10, reeled off five PRs in seven events, scoring three fifth-place finishes in the ‘A’ division, earned a new Pacific Recordable Time (which are used to compile Pacific Swimming’s top swimmers at the end of the season), in the 100 back and collected a new Junior Olympic time in the 200 free and 100-yard breaststoke.
Lauren Akin, 12, clocked six personal-best times in eight disciplines, scored in seven of eight in the ‘A’ division and earned two new Junior Olympic times. Her eight-second improvement in the 500-yard freestyle met the qualifying standard for the Far Western Championship meet, which is coming up at the end of the short-course season.
The Makos are ready to make last-ditch qualifying efforts.
