CONCORD — Three members of Morgan Hill Swim Club did their best to keep up last week at Pacific Swimming’s long course Far Western Championships in Concord. It was the fastest meet of its kind.

Coming off a very strong effort at Sectionals, the Makos’ Christiana Bridges, 14, didn’t have much left in the tank to improve in the 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle.

Teammate Sesa Ferdun, 12, who entered the 200-meter breaststroke without the necessary amount of training because of a broken arm suffered months ago, managed to surpass her previous-best mark by more than eight seconds. She touched well ahead of her competitors in three minutes, 9.77 seconds.

“Sesa showed she’s on her way back if she isn’t there already,” Makos coach Mark Scott said Tuesday. “She’s very competitive. She lives for big meets.”

Ferdun moved up significantly in her age group and easily met the time required for the 13-14 Far Western Qualifying Standard.

Kaitlin Rooney, 10, also of Morgan Hill Swim Club, soaked up the experience of her first full Far Westerns, swimming four events in as many days. She was close to setting personal bests in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter backstroke — finishing in 3:07.27 and 1:28.66, respectively — but battled nerves in the 400 freestyle, where her cut (5:45.31) missed the finals by a few spots.

The meet, which began July 28, featured 1,263 swimmers from 157 teams based in 23 states, Mexico and Canada.

The Makos’ next competition is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.
