SWIMMING: Bulldogs heading into ST Finals after first dual-meet loss

SHS boys qualify two relays for CCS at Santa Teresa Division
Finals
SAN JOSE — Central Coast Section-qualifying marks finally came in for Sobrato boys swimming last weekend but not enough for the team to capture a second straight league title.

Adam Jasper, Patrick Read, Danny Thompson and Paul Watts made the cut in the championship heats of the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays Saturday, as the Bulldogs finished second behind Piedmont Hills in the Santa Teresa Division Finals.

The Pirates (7-0 in league duals) scored 501 points at Independence High School’s Frank Fiscalini International Swim Center to capture the team championship, edging the second-place Bulldogs (6-1) by 15.

Thompson and Jasper helped Sobrato High School win three events on the boys’ side. Thompson won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.11 seconds, and Jasper the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.46.

The Bulldogs touched first in the 200-freestyle relay (1:33.08) and second in the 200-medley relay (1:47.11). Those were just enough to advance Sobrato’s top foursome into Friday and Saturday’s CCS Championships at Santa Clara International Swim Center.

The Lady Bulldogs also added to their contingent for sectionals. Gabrielle Smith qualified while winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:24.87, and freshman Christiana Bridges added the 200-yard freestyle standard to her collection. Bridges had already qualified in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle, which she won Saturday in 5:22.

Prospect scored 388.5 to win a very close girls meet, outlasting Piedmont Hills (378) and Branham (358.5). The SHS girls (306) followed in fourth.
