girls team won 106-88, and the boys won 114-67.

Track

SALINAS – The Live Oak boys and girls track and field teams were defeated at Salinas on Friday. The Acorn boys lost 100-33, and the girls lost 86-41.

The boys frosh/soph team also lost, but the girls team improved to 3-0 with a 68-61 victory.

The frosh/soph girls team was led by Ashley Caesar, who showed how to rule with four first-place finishes. She was part of the 4×100 relay team and took first in the 100 meter and in the high jump.

Her pole vault mark of 7’0” is believed by coach Dean Ramond to be a school record. Vault, which is coached by Athletic Director Dennis Martin, was just reintroduced this year after not being offered for about 10 years.

Azucena Atanacio won shot put and discuss for the frosh/soph team. Her twin brother Jesus probably would have placed in the frosh/soph distance races but was moved up to varsity, Raymond said.

For the boys, Brandon Powell won the 65 high hurdles, Jon Hart won 300 hurdles and Kent Wu won the triple jump.

Sophomore Billy Wong and senior Kris Mott highlighted the varsity meet, scoring 21 of the team’s 33 points.

Wong won both the mile and two mile and took second in the half mile. Mott took first in the half mile and second in the quarter mile.

The Acorns were missing distance runner Jason Alcarez, who was checking out MIT, where he was accepted for college. The 4.0 plus student also has been accepted at Cal and at Stanford.

Sophomore Heather Molyneaux led the girls varsity team. She was part of the 4×100 relay first-place team and won the 100s and came in second in the 200s and in the long jump.

Nicki Weatherford won the 200 just in front of Molyneaux. Leanne Lopez won the triple jump, and Ashley Trask was second in pole vault at 6’0”.

Softball

SALINAS – Live Oak (3-10, 0-6 TCAL) was no-hit en route to a 9-0 loss at North Salinas (14-4, 5-2 TCAL) on Friday. Monica Abbott struck out 20 batters to earn her seventh no-hitter of the season.

Volleyball

Live Oak remains perfect in the Tri-County Athletic League after defeating Palma 15-3, 15-10, 15-10 Friday night.

“We never felt like we should have gone five games against them the first time,” said coach John Telfer. “So it felt good to have a short game.”

Drew Pearson and Chris Deem both had 10 kills. Matt McElroy had eight kills for Live Oak (18-9, 8-0 TCAL).

Cameron Bassett had some good play at outside hitter. Josh Valdez, the shortest player on the floor for the Acorns at 5-foot-7, came up with several good digs as a defensive specialist. Justin Disalvo, who played his freshman year for the Acorns before leaving and moving back, came up with four kills in the win against Alisal.

Live Oak will play at Seaside on Wednesday. Live Oak is preparing for the May 7 game at Gilroy that will probably determine the league championship.
