CLUB RUGBY: South Valley wins DIII state title; regionals next

South Valley High School Rugby Club played its first set of
games against Pleasanton before a festive crowd last Friday at the
Outdoor Sports Center. Nicknamed the Bucks, South Valley lost the
varsity match 19-17, surrendering the tying try and go-ahead
conversion with no time left. South Valley posted a solid 21-16 win
in the frosh/soph game, led by Cumorah Saulala’s three conversions,
good for six points.

Nicknamed the Bucks, South Valley lost the varsity match 19-17, surrendering the tying try and go-ahead conversion with no time left, but triumphed 21-16 in the frosh/soph game, led by Cumorah Saulala’s three conversions, good for six points. The younger Bucks also received tries from Isley Nagel-Watene, and Live Oak students Cookie Alvarez and Clay Miller.

At the varsity level, Live Oak’s Mitch Marcum and Austin David, and Sobrato’s Nic Kavanaugh touched down tries for the Bucks, with Saulala rounding out the scoring by converting David’s try for two points.

The clubs are scheduled for a rematch March 9 at the Dublin Sports Complex.

South Valley will host Los Gatos at 7 p.m. Friday at the OSC. The varsity Bucks also play Saturday (9:30 a.m.) at Santa Rosa.
