I’m responding to the letter to the editor by Natasha Wist in the Aug. 26 edition, regarding the Patriot Act. I commend Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage for having the courage to stand alone and vote against the anti-Patriot Act resolution. It seems to me that he is the only one on the board using common sense regarding this matter.

Given that we are at war with terrorists after being attacked by them on Sept. 11, 2001, it justifies stricter measures to try to insure it does not happen again. There is a process in place that initiates action only if there is a good reason to do so.

It seems that the shock of the Sept. 11 attack is waning in some people’s minds. Additionally, the letter focuses on and I quote, “to spy on and monitor the movements of American citizens, legal immigrants and other residents of this country.” There is no mention of the focus on terrorists, suspected terrorists, illegal aliens and others that display suspicious actions (the real reason for the Patriot Act).
