Following a 22-year tradition, the Live Oak Foundation awarded grants totaling nearly $20,000 to Morgan Hill public schools.
“There were some excellent grant proposals to consider this year,” Foundation President George Thomas said. “We are pleased we can help the students of the district by giving the dedicated teachers who created these proposals the tools they need.”
Each of the nine elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and one continuation high school in the district received at least one grant.
Grants awarded this year include: $1,352 to Burnett Elementary for books and tapes for all grade and ability levels; $1,000 to Sobrato High for library books; $500 to El Toro and Jackson Elementary for library books; $972 to P.A. Walsh Elementary for a kindergarten reading program; and $1,000 to Central High for tapes and books.
This year, with the opening of the new Sobrato High, Thomas said the foundation may consider a name change. The name has never meant to refer specifically to Live Oak High, as the foundation benefits all district schools, but now with two high schools, the community may need clarification about the purpose of the foundation.
The goal of the Live Oak Foundation, Thomas said, is helping all district schools purchase tools and programs and pay for “extras,” like special speakers, special staff training and substitutes for staff development, beyond what the District budget provides.
The foundation raises money through its popular wine tour and dinner held annually in the fall and through private and corporate donations.
Since its inception in 1981, the foundation has awarded more than $450,000 to local schools.
