Pauline Huynh, a 17-year-old senior at Sobrato High School, is this week’s Student of the Week.
What inspires you?
What inspires me? It’s more like who inspires me. The people who inspire me to be the best person I could be are my friends and the people I work with and volunteer. They all have a passion for doing things that benefits others, whether its on a small or big scale, and I love that about them. It inspires me to work harder to give back to my community.
What is your favorite subject in school, and why?
My favorite subject in school right now would probably be photography. I love learning about all the different ways a picture can be taken, the different settings and techniques, and how so much can be said in just one simple picture.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be?
If I had the power to change one thing in the world, I would change the fact that I can only change one thing. Just kidding. I would get rid of corruption so that the world would be a better place. Without corruption, we wouldn’t have issues like millionaires not helping out charities and doing good for the community, even though they have so much to spare and offer. Although if corruption just evaporates into thin air, I guess there’s a price to pay, since without corruption, the United States wouldn’t even exist because we would have never separated from England in the first place.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
This sounds a bit ridiculous but I would choose to go to San Diego. Usually the obvious choice would be France, the UK, and even Narnia, but San Diego is a special place for me since I have three little cousins there that I don’t get to see very often since most of my mom’s side of the family lives around San Jose. I love spending my vacations with them and if I could go anywhere right now, I would choose San Diego in a heartbeat.
Name one big challenge in your life right now:
I think the biggest challenge in my life right now would be balancing my schedule. It’s not as bad because sports and college apps are off my agenda at the moment, but I’m currently working on organizing an event with the P.A.R.T.I. Program, since our 15th annual MLK event is coming up. Balancing that with school, tutoring, and volunteering has been making my life a bit hectic.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be a job that would allow me to make a difference in my community and help people as much as my abilities would allow me. It would be so amazing to be a singer/songwriter/pharmacist because I would be able to cheer up the patients with music, as well as have some sort of treatment or cure that would make them feel better.
What are your three favorite things?
My three favorite things are music (especially singing and posting videos to my YouTube channel for musical Mondays), fashion (whether it’s clothes or helping to organize fashion shows for the P.A.R.T.I. Program), and spending time with my friends.
Favorite book:
I honestly don’t have a favorite book, but ever since I was little, I always loved Meg Cabot’s writing. I loved books that had the sense of fantasy or fairy tale because they always took me to different worlds that I never thought about. I also love Rick Riordan’s writing especially since the “Kane Chronicles,” “Percy Jackson,” and the “Heroes of Olympus” relate to mythology and I find it so fascinating.
What do you want to do after high school?
After high school, I’m planning to major in chemistry, preferably towards a pharmacy degree. I want to eventually work in a hospital because I love having interactions with people, especially with patients because I have the ability to help them with the medication they need.
Something that makes you smile:
Volunteering always makes me smile because everyone is always so happy to be there and extremely friendly. I’ve met so many people from different schools because of volunteering, and I honestly don’t think that our paths would have crossed otherwise.
Top three most played songs on you iTunes or iPod
Choosing three of my most played songs is tough for me since my music preferences are all over the place, especially since I usually listen to Pandora. If I really had to choose, I would say my favorite songs are “Nothing Without Love” by Max Schneider, “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic, and “We Are The Ones” by King the Kid.
